"Mihana Souza's second solo CD continues her remarkable and resourceful journey into contemporary and world music. She cooks up a menu of diverse and savory blends, like "Chucky," a country-spirited novelty with its ono lyrics about teriyaki chicken, poi, sashimi, kim chee, sushi and more grinds — easily the best and most commercial entry. Souza, normally a member of Puamana, the hapa-haole-singing group fronted by the late Irmgard Aluli, clearly has a rollicking good time in her solo journey, composing alone or with collaborators. "Family" is a ballad extolling the memories and joys associated with 'ohana, values that often get lost in today's music. "Wrap" has a sweetly nostalgic tropical swing and English and Hawaiian lyrics. Each of the 13 tunes featured has one-word titles: "Don't," "Darling," "Fire," "Thief," "Dream" and so on.

The outlook: Hard to categorize and not easily explainable, Mihana has emerged as a refreshingly different and continuously delightful Island songbird, sharing stories with the appealing posture of a folk artist.

Our take: Mihana is living her dream with a still-in-the-bud career as a soloist; she's on the move and breaking new ground."

1. Dream

This song was written by my mother, Irmgard F. Aluli for my father, Nane A. Aluli. Mom and dad were married in D.C., 1942. Right after their honeymoon, my father was called away to perform his war duties; he was in the intelligence unit for the Army. As a young bride missing her husband so, my mother wrote 2 versus to and for my father. (Verse 1 & 2) After leaving those versus, my father wrote the last 2 versus back to my mother. Everytime our family sings this song, we cry...missing mom and dad with their love song. Enjoy One Little Dream of you.

Once in the dusk of evening
We had to say good bye
Now, though you're miles away dear
Twilight brings you ever to my heart

I lie awake at night
The hours go slowly by
I count the fireflies
And dream about your eyes
Those little words we spoke when we said good bye
One little dream of you

I press my pillow close
The teardrops seem to know
That all I can disclose
Belongs to you alone
May heaven high above watch over you
One little dream of you

I lie awake at night
The hours go slowly by
Dreaming of starlit skies
Dreaming of paradise
Soft music, laughter, you and a kiss or two
One little dream of you

I hug my pillow tight
And dream into the night
Dreaming of all your charms
And that I'm in your arms
Dreaming these dreams are true
And I am home with you
One little dream of you, my dear
One little dream of you

2. Don't

...speaking of Dreams...This song, DON’T came in a DREAM... I love this line :The sun and the moon and all of the stars...they could be ours...don’t go... please stay...with me!

Don’t go, linger just awhile
I like the way you smile
And let your love light shine on me
Don’t go, the laughter in your eyes
Makes me realize
The very best things in life are free

Don’t go
Please stay
The sun and the moon and all of the stars
They could be ours

Don’t go, lying in your arms
Safe from any harm
As the stars shine down above
Don’t go, kiss me once again
And sing a sweet refrain
Of our everlasting love

Don’t go
Please stay
The sun and the moon and all of the stars
They could be ours
One more moment
One more word
Love is calling
Let its voice be heard
Don’t go
Please stay
Don’t go
Please stay

Don’t go
Wish that you were mine
And let our lives entwine
Into a loving family
Don’t go
Wish that I were yours
We’ll walk upon the shore
To seek our destiny

Don’t go
Please stay
The sun and the moon and all of the stars
They could be ours
Don’t go
Please stay
With me

3. Wrap

Kiki Mo’okini, a dear friend and Hawaiian speaker, walked the beach with me every morning to greet the sun. 5:30-6 A.M. she came one morning and blessed me with the phrase, “He aluula. He pualena. He ao nani loa. He kinohi hou. Dawn comes, we are blessed with her light. So beautiful, we begin again.” The rest of the song, music and words came in the midst of celebrating Puakea Noglemieir’s 50th Birthday. This is a blessing for all. Celebrate New Beginnings! Everyday!

Wrap me in your morning Hawaii
Let your breezes take my breath away
Fill me with hope and dignity
Love me and I'll be on my way
He alaula a he pua lena
He aonani loa
He kinouhi hou

Oh, wrap me in your morning, Pua kea
Let your spirit touch my very soul
Give me strength and wisdom of ages
Hold me and then let me go
He alaula a he pua lena
He aonani loa
He kinouhi hou

4. Chucky

Chucky’s my husband and Carlton is his good friend...and boy, can they cook!!! Yahoo!

Chucky’s in the kitchen cooking teriyaki chicken
Slicin’ up sashimi, mixing the poi
Carlton’s on the side cuttin’ up a hind
Of pipi and pua’a and he’s steamin’ all the moi
All the grinds from the kitchen
They’re really finger lickin’
Bring your chili pepper water, hot mustard and soy

Kimchi, sushi, laulau and adobo
Portugese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Filipino
Anything at all, they just have a ball
From potluck to a big luau
Why, they can cook it all
Good men in the kitchen
They’re awfully good lookin’
But, it’s how they do their cookin’
Makes me feel allright
All night uh huh
They’re cookin’

(Guitar Solo)

They’re cookin’ steamin’ and a-stewin’
I love it what they’re doin’ and they’re doin’ it right

Chucky’s in the kitchen cooking teriyaki chicken
Slicin’ up sashimi, mixing the poi
Carlton’s on the side cuttin/ up a hind
Of pipi and pua’a and he’s steamin’ all the moi
All the grinds from the kitchen
They’re really finger lickin’
Bring your chili pepper water, hot mustard and soy

Kimchi, sushi, laulau and adobo
Portugese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Filipino
Anything at all, they just have a ball
From potluck to a big luau
Why, they can cook it all
Good men in the kitchen
They’re awfully good lookin’
But, it’s how they do their cookin’
Makes me feel allright
Good men in the kitchen
They’re awfully good lookin’
But, it’s how they do their cookin’
Makes me feel allright

Chucky’s in the kitchen
Chucky
Chucky’s in the kitchen
Chucky
Chucky’s in the kitchen
Chucky
Chucky’s in the kitchen
Chucky

5. Thief

I just had the one line “like a thief in the night, you stole my heart away...there was nothing I could do or say you took it anyway...” The rest was filled in by my beloved co-writer, (my partner in CRHYME) RICHARD STEKOL. I love it!

Nobody cares, nobody sees
It doesn't matter, but it matters to me
You knew what you wanted, you're that good
And I gave it up like you knew I would
But where I’m goin’, this road I’m on
Men come to me and then they're gone
But you stayed and took your toll
In my heart and soul
Like a thief in the night
You took breath away
There was nothing I could do or say
You to it anyway
Like a thief in the night
You touched me in the dark
Then ran when you left your mark
Like a thief in the night

I feel good, then I go mad
I still want what I never had
I don’t want silver and I don’t want gold
Just peace and love and a hand to hold
But, back in time my world was new
And I had nothing but my dream of you
But now you're here and so am I

But you want to fly
Like a thief in the night
You took breath away
There was nothing I could do or say
You took it anyway
Like a thief in the night
Once your had touched my hand
You knew I'd understand
You're a thief in the night

Patience is rare virtue
But wait too long and it can hurt you
What you steal you must return
Cos true love must be earned
Like a thief in the night
You took my breath away
There was nothing I could do or say
You took it anyway
Like a thief in the night
Once you had touched my hand
You made me understand
You're a thief in the night
A thief in the night

6.Fire

My husband is a fireman and I wanted to write a song to honor them but...songs do have a mind of their own. Hence this is what I ended up with!

Hot hot
Hot hot
Fire fire out of control, ooh
Hot hot you'd better go, ooh
Remember what you learned
Play with fire and you'll get burned
Fire, fire out of control, ooh

Hot hot too hot to handle, ooh
Better run, better leave all your able, ooh
Hot licks a burning inferno
You better drop baby you got to rock & roll
Fire fire out of control, ooh

Hot licks a burning inferno
You better drop baby you got to rock & roll
Fire fire out of control, ooh

Hot hot
Fire fire out of control, ooh
Hot hot, you'd better go, ooh
Remember what you learned
Play with fire and you'll get burned
Fire fire out of control, ooh

Fire fire out of control, ooh
Fire fire you'd better go, ooh

7. Darling

I wrote this for a good friend who was breaking up with her “dear” love. (This is my) favorite song...and I think every girls sentiment at one time or another!

Darling
You know I can't say good bye
You know I'm not good enough, tough enough
Strong enough to walk out that door
Sweetheart
I'm needing a helping hand
'Cos I can't be your woman
And you just can't be my man
And you know that I would if I could, and I should
Just walk out that door
And I'm praying I won't need you
Won't love you, won't want you anymore
And all through my crying
You know I'm trying the best that I can
Cos I can't be your woman
And you just can’t be my man

And you know that I would if I could!
And I should just walk out that door
And I'm praying I won't want you
Won't need you, won't love you anymore
And all through my crying
You know that I'm trying the best that I can
‘Cos I can't be your woman
And you just can't be my man

Darling, you know I can't say good bye
You know I'm not good enough, strong enough
Tough enough to walk out that door
Sweetheart
I'm needing a helping hand
'Cos I can't be your woman
And you just can't be my man
'Cos I can't be your woman
And you just can't be my man

8. Change

I wrote this song for the same girl I wrote Darling for...after your heart is ripped to shreds...you CHANGE...This is the all time “empowerment” song. Change your mind and change your life! Yeah!

What do you mean I can’t change
When I’m changing everyday
The color of my hair, the clothes that I wear
You know I’m changing my way

You may think it’s just talkin’
And talk could be my demise
But, how do you know
And all that you know
It’s not just some cheap disguise

Well, I’m changing everyday
Doesn’t matter what I say

‘Cos there’s a change comin’ down
Like summer, winter, spring or fall
Well, it could be an exchange
Chump change or loose change
Or no change at all

There’s a change on me
And it happens all the time
Well, I could have a change of heart, fall apart
Or, honey I can always change my mind

But, I’m changing everyday
And there’s nothing in my way

What do you mean I can’t change
You can help me if you try
Just open your heart and make a new start
And stop asking me why

You may think it’s just talkin’
And talk could be my demise
But, how do you know
And all that you know
It’s not just some cheap disguise

‘Cos there’s a change comin’ down
Like summer, winter, spring or fall
Well, it could be an exchange or chump change
Or loose change or no change at all

‘Cos there’s a change on me
And it happens all the time
Well, I could have a change of heart
Fall apart or honey I can always change my mind
Well, I could have a change of heart
Fall apart or honey I can always change my mind

9. Limit

I wrote this song for my guitar players, Sam Henderson,Richard Bredice, Richard Stekol and everyone after that. When I go to hear them play, they are just SO GOOD I can’t sit down, I just have to DANCE

Well, you take me to the limit
Bring me to my knees
Don’t know if I should thank you
Or beg you pretty please
I'd like a slow burn on a fast track
Because your guitar drives me crazy
So do you

I see your fingers move and your body groove
I get such pleasure
When I'm watching your pain
And, if you don't mind, would you be so kind
Just keep on doin' it again and again
Because your guitar drives me crazy
It takes me places where I've never been
I'll take a slow burn on a fast track
And a cool lick or two
Because your guitar drives me crazy
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I'll take a slow burn on a fast track
And a cool lick or two
Because your guitar drives me crazy
Ooh, ooh, ooh
‘Cos your guitar drives me crazy
So do you

10. Family

This AMAZING song is also co-written by Richard Stekol. I cry singing it...as it captures all my favorite memories, dreams and hopes.

Sometimes in the morning, I will think of you
In the evening when the day is done
There‚s a gentle breeze moving thru the trees
Takes me to the place where it had all begun

Over mountain, valleys and across the sea
we are all toghether, we are family
Love is in the air, laughter everywhere
Hands to hold and secrets told and dreams to share

Wherever you may roam
May these memories always bring you home
Wherever you may go
May these memories always let you know
You are loved

I believe a miracle is in us all
Every prayer is answered be it great or small
God will understand the measure of a man
Leave it to his wisdom we are in his hands

Please accept the gift that you're so worthy of
The life we live between us is the bridge to love
Live a simple dream
Life is as it seams
Every ocean's fading from a mountain stream

And though we‚re far a part
Know that faith will light the path way to your heart
And till we meet again
Listen to the falling of the gentle rain
It‚s sweet refrain
You are loved
You are loved

11. Road

Written for a very very dear friend of mine who always took the “road less travelled” while I always took the easy route. This is for “her”. Careing, sharing, giving and teaching...that we must love, share, give and teach...NOW. More about the amazing song becasue of the chant...see intro.

On the road less traveled, I hear a conga beat
The gazelle is dancing, prancing on her feet
She smiles and beckons softly
To come be a part of her traveling companions
On a journey of the heart
On the road :less traveled, there's peace and harmony
The pursuit of happiness, the right to be free
It's a road so abundant and rich beyond compare
And there's more than enough, if we take care

12. Chant

My family chant...aloha rises like the scent of a flower. Gently touching you, our friends who have come. In the beginning a generous flower blossomed here and it reaches out to touch you and draw you close...come..come and enjoy this ALOHA...and the fragrance of this very special flower.

Hu a`e ke ala o ka ho`okipa
Pa olu olu a ho`ia`u
I na hoa
I kipa mai
Mai kinohi mai
Ka na`au o ke kanaka makua
Ua mohala kapua
Ua e ala mai
Ua lana ia ke`ala o ka ho`okipa a puni mai o`a`o

He mai
He mai
He mai
He honi mai ke `ala o ka ho`okipa

Aloha e
Aloha e
Aloha e

Our Aloha,
And welcome rises like the scent of a flower
Gently touching you, our friends and family who have come
In the beginning,
A generous spirit blossomed here,
And it reaches out to touch you and bring you close.
Come,
Come and enjoy the sweet scent of this special flower
And the Aloha that is here.
Aloha e
Aloha e
Aloha e
There is only love
And so,
Go forth and let this love shine before men.
